Event at Marchmont

IN CONVERSATION WITH
DAVID EUSTACE
AT MARCHMONT HOUSE

Thanks to Hugo, the team behind the scenes at Marchmont House and the guests who joined us as part of the weekend art huddle and exhibition launch.

I was invited to do a series of talks on my life, work and photographic projects accompanied with a premier of images from the portfolio FRIENDS & ARTISTS in the ever developing artists' studio area.

I also exhibited, for the first time, a sculpture I made titled: LUNCH WITH GERTRUDE. Created with fallen leaves collected from the graveside of Gertrude Stein in Père Lachaise cemetery, Paris in the company of a friend and fellow artist Douglas Gordon.

Marchmont is a special place, a home to makers and creators and a community which lends support, encouragement and inspiration to anyone who becomes involved.

Sculpture: LUNCH WITH GERTRUDE

Following on from the weekend's success we also held a special drinks reception the following week at the Artists Studio space at Marchmont where the portfolio FRIENDS & ARTISTS was exhibited alongside prints from the portfolio TREE.

TREE was created in collaboration with Marchmont and accompanied by a beautiful poem by the artist J Daniel Beaudry titled, BREATH. More details on this project can be found here.

Please enjoy some snaps from a wonderful few days in a very special place created by some very interesting minds.

ANOTHER HISTORICAL MILESTONE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY...

TWO EXHIBITIONS OPENING THIS MONTH
SWG3 and THE ROYAL GLASGOW INSTITUTE OF THE FINE ARTS, KELLY GALLERY

I'm very excited to announce two forthcoming exhibitions in Glasgow opening the end of this month and early next month. I'm also delighted that once again my work has been merited to serve as a milestone in the development and recognition of photography in the arts in Scotland.

In 1997 I was the first photographer to be given a main gallery exhibition at The Glasgow Art Club. In 2015 my 'Selected Works' was the first time in The Scottish Gallery's 176 year history that an entire exhibition was awarded to a photographer and the only photographer whose work the The Scottish Gallery represents.

This coming March, 2019, my 'Mar a Bha' (English: 'As it Was") and 'Desert Lines' portfolios will be shown at The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts / Kelly Gallery.

This will again be a first. 'This is also the first time in it's 158 year long history that The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts has devoted an entire exhibition to the work of a single photographer and we are excited to bring this opportunity to view ...' Jim Tweedie, RGI Gallery.

'This is emotionally intelligent photography, responding to, not controlling, a beautiful landscape.' Sara Stevenson, formerly Chief Curator of Photography at The National Galleries of Scotland.

Julie Lawson, Senior Curator, Scottish National Portrait Gallery notes of Eustace’s work. '(…) images are beautifully and meticulously crafted, without artifice and with a directness and sincerity of vision that is the hallmark of his work.'

There is an opening evening on March 1st, 6pm - 8pm for those in Glasgow wishing to attend. The exhibition runs from 2nd - 30th March 2019.

All prints are limited editions and available for sale. Please contact RGI.

My second exhibition will be at SWG3. 'Unique Works: NYC Polaroids 2004' portfolio will run from the 21st Feb - 29th Mar 2019. This unique body of work consists of 16 individual Polaroids serving as one work I made in SoHo, NYC back in 2004.
Whilst on the surface this may seem a very different portfolio from those being offered at the RGI they are in essence from the same train of thought. The theme of time links these portfolios and not only supports but reflects how my work is developing.

My relationship with SWG3 goes back to day one (fifteen years ago) when the gallery was largely a dream of Andrew Fleming Brown. I was part of the initial creative board to offer advice how the space could develop and form. Now regarded as one, if not the leading contemporary multi-functioning arts venue in Scotland, few could have imagined the growth and development of this dream. Andrew and his team have brought an energy to the arts with hopes well beyond any local boundaries. This has been rewarded by the talent this art space attracts.

We're having a very informal opening night in the ACID Bar on the 21st Feb from 6pm - 8pm. Please contact SWG3 for details.

IT'S BEEN "OK" FOR THE PAST THREE MONTHS

These past few months have seen me fully committed to a magical project, which at present, I can't say too much about, other than it's been an incredible opportunity and experience. Towards the middle of August I was approached by Gillian Berrie (Producer) and David Mackenzie (Director) of Sigma Films who offered me an open brief to create a stills document around their new Sigma / Netflix production of David's latest film: OUTLAW KING ("OK")... filming at home here in Scotland. It was a major commitment of 65 days but on reflection very much a worthwhile one on many levels. The scale of this film / production is epic and to see up close so many talented folk come together for the one hope is a reminder of the passion and professionalism in the film industry. It was a genuine privilege to be a small part of this group. Netflix have purchased the rights to the images and so alas at this time I can't release any from the project. Hopefully, however, on the films release the portfolio will be made available in collaboration with David Mackenzie and an idea he and I have discussed and which would make a very powerful exhibition... watch this space.

TEDx GLASGOW TALK IS NOW LIVE

"What if..."

Thoroughly enjoyed taking part in TEDx Glasgow 2017.  The enthusiasm and energy from the audience and commitment from the production staff was simply fantastic. Thanks to all involved.

I decided to talk on following your passions, dreams and how it's often a very confusing and indirect path that can help us realise them. Taking that first often hesitant step and how serendipity can smile when least expected.

"WHAT IF..." hopefully offers thought, inspiration and perhaps some answers.

I'm a great believer where you come from should never hold you back from where you hope to go...and that if you care passionately about something then whilst a final result is never assured you should never fear that first step.

This lecture is based on my hopes as a 16 year old in Glasgow's East End and dreaming of a road trip adventure in a far-off distant land.

Almost 30 years later I realised that dream and created the portfolio IN SEARCH OF EUSTACE with my 16 year old daughter, Rachael. This is the events that led and connected many paths that one day saw me being given complete creative freedom to produce this body of work supported by the US retail giant Anthropologie to highlight their celebrations of artists who inspire them

I hope you take something from this and enjoy.

"Never allow WHAT IF to become IF ONLY".

This talk aims to highlight and display evidence of the importance in taking a first, often doubtful and fearful, step. The possibility of rejection and negativity can cast doubt on hopes and to an extent shape the future. "What if?"

Yosemite Park through the eyes of David Eustace

Can't believe it's over 6 years now since we made this. Great folk involved, lovely location and superb little camera. Still as fresh today...the ad that is..not me haha. When an advert isn't overtly scripted or in this case not at all...the idea was the real voice. It's all good.

Small Camera, Epic Shots. David Eustace takes us on a journey through Yosemite Park with his Lumix G3. This is the long version of the Lumix G3 TV ad - For more information, please visit -- http://www.lumixlifestyle.co.uk/lumix-g3-showcase/ http://www.panasonic.co.uk/

What Dreams We Have now on Nowness

I was recently asked by Scottish Ballet to “create a visual statement” to launch their digital season. Given creative freedom I decided to write and direct a short film based on a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar. I’ve titled this film “WHAT DREAMS WE HAVE" and you can watch it here on my website.

Such projects only come to life when many come together with a single common hope... to create a unique and bold narrative. I’m grateful to all who contributed and delighted for Scottish Ballet to see it launch on the incredibly influential NOWNESS channel as one of their “Picks”.
